What are the age requirements to join Cub Scouts?
Any boy in 1st through 5th grades is eligible to join Cub Scouts. Depending on their age they will be in one of the following ranks:
Tiger Cubs (entering first grade or age 7), Wolf Cub Scouts (entering second grade, or age 8), Bear Cub Scouts (entering third grade, or age 9), or Webelos Scouts (entering fourth or fifth grade, or age 10). Once the boy reaches sixth grade they move up into the Boy Scout program.
What does Cub Scouting offer my son?
Cub Scouting offers fun and challenging activities that promote character development and physical fitness. Service projects, ceremonies, games, and other activities guide boys through the core values and give them a sense of personal achievement. Through positive peer group interaction and parental guidance, boys also learn honesty, bravery, and respect.

How does participation in Cub Scouting affect participation in other activities?
The Cub Scout program is designed to compliment many other extracurricular activities. We meet each Monday during the school year, three Den meetings and one Pack meeting per month. Boys who participate in organized sports like soccer, baseball, basketball, swimming, gymnastics, etc, or academic-based extracurricular activities like music, art, science etc., can be recognized for these activities though Cub Scout belt loops and pins which are worn on their uniform.

What are the responsibilities of a parent?
  • Provide help and support for the den and pack. We ask all families volunteer for one position in the pack--this may be anything from a Den Leader to helping set up for the Pinewood Derby.
  • Work with your son on advancement projects and activities.
  • Attend pack meetings with your son and present his advancement awards to him at the pack meeting.
  • Attend and assist with den outings.
  • Attend Cub Scout Family campouts with your son.

Do Cub Scouts go camping?

Yes. Pack 177 typically does at least two camps per year at offical BSA residence camps. Cub Scout camping is made to be easier for the young boys, so food is typically prepared by the Camp, and sleeping is in provided tents or bunks. We also periodically do overnight camps at area campgrounds on our own, and even stay overnight at other locations like the Museum of Flight.
What other activities are available to Cub Scouts and their families?

Pack 177 is very active, providing a rich environment for boys and their families. Typical annual events include:

  • Winter Campout
  • Scouting for Food
  • Veteran’s Day Observance
  • Caroling & Holiday Party
  • Blue & Gold Banquet
  • Pinewood Derby
  • Summer Day Camp
  • Summer Resident Camp
  • and more!
How much is it going to cost?
The annual Pack 177 dues of $75 covers such items as the National registration fee, Boys' Life Magazine, the neckerchief and handbook appropriate for your son's rank, the pinewood derby kits, and all patches and awards for the year (through next June).

Other costs include uniforms and some activity fees including those for the Day Camp and Resident Camps. Youth members participate in one fund-raising activity (popcorn), which helps to cover Den supplies, equipment, and other activities.

Where can I buy uniforms?
The Pack provides the Pack 177 number and required uniform patches, so all you need to provide is the uniform shirt. You can purchase that at the Puget Sound Service Center and Scout Shop, which is located at 3120 Rainier Ave S in the Mount Baker area. More information about the store including hours and directions can be found on their Web site.

If you can't make it to the store, you can order everything online from the BSA retail store at ScoutStuff.Org
