What is a Cub Scouts Core Values?

When we refer to Core Values in Cub Scouts we are referring to two very specific values, The Cub Scout Promise and The Law Of The Pack. Obviously core values extend well beyond these two but in scouting these two values are indeed our primary focus. These core values are two of the most important values a scout will learn no matter what grade or age they enter into scouting. Lets look at these two values...

The Cub Scout Promise

"I Promise to do my best
To do my duty to God and my country
To help other people, and
To obey the Law of the Pack"

So what does "The Cub Scout Promise" really mean?

When we teach "The Cub Scout Promise" to our scouts we also teach them what the promise is and why it is important. Lets break it down...

1. "I promise to do my best"

A promise is when you say you will do something and you follow through with it. A promise is keeping your word. In other words it is being Honest. It is very easy for boys at this age to "bend the truth" and we try to instill Honesty in them and how important it is. Once they learn what "Promise" is, all we ask is that they do there best at what ever they do.

2. "To do my duty to God and my country"

A scout is reverent and we ask them to do what is right. We also teach them to be proud to be an American and to follow the laws. We teach them to be good citizens by doing what we can to take care of our environment and to be good to other people.

3. "To help other people"

Simply said, we teach them to do things for others that would help them. We instill this in them so that they may do this on there own.

4. "To obey the Law of the Pack"

We do this by setting rules that the Cub Scouts set up on there own. The rules that they set up are called the code of conduct. We follow these rules and we teach them to do what Akela asks them to do. This teaches them to be a good scout and to be proud to be a scout.

The Law of the Pack

The Cub Scout follows Akela
The Cub Scout helps the pack go
The pack helps the Cub Scout grow
The Cub Scout gives goodwill

Okay, so "The Law of the Pack" means?

Well again lets break it down...

1. "The Cub Scout follows Akela"

Who is "Akela"? Akela is a good leader. Examples of Akela at home are your mother or father or other adult member of your family. In the pack there Akelas are there adult leaders. At school it would be there teachers. It is important for them to follow and listen to what they say and ask.

2. "The Cub Scout helps the pack go"

They help the pack by coming to all the meetings and doing what they can to help. It is important for all scouts to participate. Without the help of scouts there would not be a pack.

3. "The pack helps the Cub Scout Grow"

By being a part of the pack the Cub Scout has fun and learns many new things that will help him in the future. They learn teamwork by doing things with others. They also learn how to do things correctly.

4. "The Cub Scout gives Goodwill"

The Cub Scout learns that by doing things to help others makes them happy, makes the people they help happy and the people they help will in turn help others as well. They see that they can make a big difference in the lives of others. A happy and smiling Cub Scout inspires goodwill in everyone.
