Eagle Scout project helps spruce up museum

He led his fellow Scouts from Boy Scout Troop 109 at the Tallahassee Museum, where they finished building and placing wooden signs identifying the vegetables, herbs, crops and flowers in the Big Bend Farm gardens.

"I am doing this for the Big Bend Farm," the SAIL High School student said. "I like to see it done. It will help the museum's farm area and help visitors interpret the garden."

The group sanded 49 signs and placed them in front of the plants the signs identified.

The project also provided a wooden signboard that will display directory information about the plants. All signs were made with cypress wood so they would age quickly and blend in with the 1880 farm-house scene.

Baldino, 17, raised more than $3,500. About $2,000 will be left over after the project and will be donated to the museum.

When Baldino was looking for an idea for his Eagle Scout project, he immediately went to see if the Tallahassee Museum had any jobs.

"He came to the museum because he loves this place," said his father, Mark Baldino.

The old garden signs were deteriorating, so John Howard Baldino chose that as his project.

"We feel so honored that he chose the museum to do his project," said Marguerite Martin, PR/marketing manager for the museum. "It is really going to add to the beautification and functionality of the garden."

Eagle Scout Coordinator Paul Baldwin has helped more than 40 young men earn Eagle Scout status.

"They start out with a huge task in front of them," Baldwin said. "They just do one thing at a time. This is an ideal project; it is a real service to the museum."
