How It All Began

Mr. John Carpenter

The history of Troop 729 begins with Mr. John Carpenter.  In 1972, he was asked by the pastor of Brown Memorial Woodbrook Church, Dr. Iain Wilson, to start a troop.  As he remembers it, Dr. Wilson said, "John, we don't have a Boy Scout troop -- and I want you to start one."  And he did.

In 1975, Mr. Carpenter's eldest son became the first young man in Troop 729 to achieve Boy Scouting's highest ranking - Eagle Scout, and in 1982, Mr. Carpenter's youngest son would do the same.

Forty years later, Mr. Carpenter is still active in the troop he helped to found and has seen many boys -- too many to name -- develop and grow into outstanding citizens.
