Frequently Asked Questions

Question - What is the difference between a den and a pack?

Answer -

A den is a small group of boys in the same grade.

Kindergarten - Lions

                        1st Grade - - - Tigers

                        2nd Grade - - -Wolves

                        3rd Grade - - - Bears

                        4th Grade - - - Webelos

                        5th Grade - - - Arrow of Light Patrol

These dens meet 2-3 times a month, for about an hour.  Each den consists of about 6-10 boys.  In these meetings they will learn, create, and try out different age appropriate skills from their Cub Scout handbook.

A pack is all of our separate dens together.  Our pack meets once a month, for 1 ½ hours.  At the pack meetings the boys will receive their awards, and participate in many fun activities.  All family members are encouraged to attend these pack meetings.

Question - How much does Cub Scouts cost?

Answer -

There is a $60 registration fee to join our Pack. There also are den dues. The den dues vary from about $1.00 on up to about $4.00 per meeting.  Each den leader sets his or her own dues depending on the number of boys in the den, and the skills and activities they have planned.

There is also the cost of the handbook, and uniform.  The handbook costs $9-15 (2 types, same book - one is paperback and one is spiral bound).  A Cub Scout shirt is $23, necessary patches cost @ $12, the neckerchief is $6, the neckerchief slide is $4, the hat is $13, and the belt ranges from $8-12, depending on size. (These prices are as of April '09 and are subject to change at any time. For more information please visit www.scoutstuff.org).

We also recommend buying a brag vest for your scout, so he can display all the patches he's earned (available for purchase during Pack Night for $10). We also have Pack 194 t-shirts for sale for $10, which can be worn at various times throughout the year (leaders will specify when class A shirts are required and when pack t-shirts may be worn to avoid confusion).

Question - What about camping?

Answer -

Camping is one of the best parts of Scouting.  Our pack will have several camp outs during the year.  There will always be plenty of advance notice, so families can plan to attend.  At these camp outs the boys will learn many valuable skills as well as attending campfires, nature walks, hikes, and just having fun.

Question - Do you do any fund-raising?

Answer -

We must fund-raise in order to keep costs down. As a pack, we sell candy bars for a couple months. It is a lot easier than it sounds and it is essential for the operation of the pack. Fund-raising will offset the cost of monthly awards, belt loops, activity pins, patches and pack activities.

Question - What is a pack committee?

Answer -

The pack committee is a group of people, such as committee chair, cubmaster, treasurer, secretary, assistant cubmaster, public relations, and advancement chair.  They will meet once a month and plan the activities for the boys, and make sure the pack needs are met.
