About Cub Scouting

Since its beginning, the Cub Scout program has been a fun and educational experience concerned with values. Besides providing a positive place where boys can enjoy safe, wholesome activities, Cub Scouting focuses on building character, improving physical fitness, teaching practical skills, and developing a spirit of community service.

Scouting builds a solid foundation for the future. Did you know that more than half of current NASA astronauts were involved in Scouting, and 39 of them are Eagle Scouts? That over 20% of US Air Force Academy cadets were involved in Scouting, and half of those are Eagle Scouts? That 189 members of the 113th US Congress participated in Scouting?

Fun at every turn! Cub Scouting is an active program. Boys learn by doing, and there's no end to the fun things that Cub Scouts do in their dens, as a pack, and at special events. With activities held at every level—family, den, and pack—Cub Scouting provides a year-round program of fun and learning for boys and their families.

Cub Scout Camping: Learn to live in the outdoors. Camping takes you on exciting adventures into the natural world.

Cub Scout Derbies: Racing in a Cub Scout derby is great fun. You'll get to design your racing vehicle, work with a parent to build it, and see it perform on race day.

Outings and Field Trips: "Outing" is a big part of Scouting. Cub Scouts get out and about with many kinds of visits and outdoor fun including field trips, hikes, nature and conservation.

Service Projects: Doing service projects together is one way that Cub Scouts keep their promise "to help other people."

Den and Pack Meetings: Den meetings are the stepping-stones by which a boy progresses through the Cub Scout program. At pack meetings, families celebrate their achievements along the way.

Blue and Gold Banquets: In February, when Scouting celebrates its "birthday," packs across the country hold blue and gold banquets. In nearly all packs, the banquet is a very special event.

Much more information about Cub Scouting is available on the Boy Scouts of America Web Site and the new Cub Hub.

About Our Pack

Pack 316 is a fun, busy, active group of Cub Scouts and adult volunteers. We are all excited about a great year for Cub Scouting here in Leander.

We meet most Monday nights during the school year from 6:30-7:30 pm at HighPoint Fellowship on West New Hope Drive. We primarily recruit from Winkley Elementary School, but we have scouts from all over the Leander area. Most weeks we have grade-level den meetings, which are like stepping stones where each boy progresses a little further towards the next rank, learning skills as he goes. We also have monthly pack meetings, where the scouts and their families celebrate accomplishments along the way, usually held in the school cafeteria at Winkley.

Cub Scouts is a family-oriented activity. We always welcome siblings as long as the focus of the programming remains on the Cub Scout. We strongly discourage "drop-offs" to weekly meetings, at least until Webelos (grades 4-5). In younger dens parents are asked to accompany their sons during activities.

Registration is $90 per year for new scouts, $60 per year for renewals. This covers membership in Pack 316 as well as the national Boy Scouts of America organization and helps fund the Pack activities throughout the year. Boys may also subscribe to Boy's Life magazine for a minimal additional charge. Scholarships and payment plans are available. It's never too late to join!

The Cub Scouts prides itself on being a uniformed organization. We refer to the full uniform as our "Class A" uniform. Parents receive a flyer about uniform needs and options. Boys in grades 1-3 will keep the same navy blue uniform for three years with minor updates; Webelos switch to the khaki and olive Boy Scout uniform for their two years. We also offer "Class B" t-shirts to wear during less formal activities and during the summer. (Sibling and adult sizes are also available.)
