In the US alone, approximately 600 million pairs of shoes are thrown away each year.
The materials used to manufacture shoes are created from chemical compounds, the kind that will create health hazards if left to disintegrate openly or in landfills.
Recycling footwear depends on the composition as well as factors such as quality and reusability.
In a United Kingdom case study completed by the Department of Trade and Industry, it was found that only10% of collected secondhand shoes were not suitable for reuse and ended up in landfills. However, over 85% of post-consumer shoe waste was disposed of in landfills, not recycled.
This is an unacceptable environmental impact, especially since even non-recyclable footwear can be a vital economic lifeline to individuals and families in financially-devastated countries...
Recipients of these shoes are eternally appreciative and become incredibly resourceful with the products they receive. Your gently worn shoes still have life-changing impact left in them.

I bet this guy wouldn't mind that they were a little worn....
In the United States and All over the world, there are people who would be happy to enjoy your discarded shoes.

Many people in Africa can’t afford to buy proper footwear and have to walk miles and miles barefoot.
Schistosomiasis is a disease caused by a parasitic worm that enters the body through a barefoot and affects more than 200 million people worldwide, especially in Africa.
This disease and many others can be prevented by simply wearing shoes.

We held a shoe drive placing collection boxes in local grammar schools, churches, the library and local stores.
Together, we were able to collect over 1150 pairs of new and used shoes to be distributed and recycled locally and internationally where they were desperately needed.
