Information for Prospective Members

We receive many questions from Cub Scout parents and others interested in learning more about joining Troop 72. This page is here to help answer your questions.

How old does my son need to be?

To be eligible, a boy must be 11 years old, or have completed the fifth grade or earned the Arrow of Light Award and be at least 10 years old. A boy must not yet be 18 years old, if you are 18 years but under 21 years you may be interested in a local Venturing Crew.

How does he join the troop?

Troop 72 is a relatively large troop with a dynamic membership.  There is no requirement to have previous scouting experience, and anyone who meets the eligibility requirements can come to a Troop 72 meeting for more information and to join. For those who are Cub Scouts, representatives from Troop 72 will attend Webeloes bridging ceremonies for those Dens who give advance notice of boys intending to join Troop 72.

What does it cost?

Troop registration fee is currently $15, but is going to increase to $24 after January 1st, 2014. This fee will be paid at re-chartering in April or prorated at per month, when joining.

As with any organization activities require money. Financial problems are understood, that is why we host many fundraising opportunities throughout the year to help offset the various registration and activity costs.

What items are necessary in Boy Scouts?

Your son will need a full field Uniform (Class “A”) including a Scout shirt with all appropriate patches, green Scout trousers or shorts or similar clothing. A BSA neckerchief is acceptable neckwear. These items can be purchased from the Scout Shop at the Council office in Rockford, IL.

Here are some other items your son will find useful. They make great gifts!

  • LED Head Lamp
  • Compass
  • A decent sleeping bag - most of our camping is during the warmer months so one that protects down to around 20 degrees if fine
  • Pocket Knife - no fixed blades knives
  • Mess Kit and Utensils
  • Nalgene or similar water bottle - some boys actually like having a canteen, that's fine too
