Quality Leadership >> Qaulity Program

Dear friends of our community,

Troop 31 is looking to recruit adult leadership. We are specifically looking for adults who would be interested in becoming an Assistant Scoutmaster (ASM). Adults do not have to have a boy in the program to be considered for Assistant Scoutmaster, they just have to have a wiliness to positively impact the youth of our community and the ability to do so. The Boy Scout Program works and it is a great way to change a kid’s life.

What would an Assistant Scoutmaster do? I’m going to answer this in two parts.

Phase 1: Those who join with us now will undergo orientation and training under the leadership of me and our current Assistant Scoutmasters working with them in their assigned Patrols.

·         ASM’s must be 21 years of age or older

·         Become registered with the BSA

·         Complete Youth Protection Training

·         Complete required training for ASM’s

·         Begin familiarization with Troop 31

·         Getting to know the scouts

·         Learning how a Boy Scout Troop works

·         Provide two deep leadership when ready

Phase  2: As we move through the next two years our intent is to have ready to go leadership in place when we get the influx of boys into the troop, rather than having to scurry at the last minute; complete the above and the below all at the same time.

·         Maintain BSA registration

·         All ASM’s are assigned one major job (such as being over a Patrol) and one minor job like (Leave No Trace Lead)

As you can see, we are looking to take out the learning curve in Part 1, instead of having to do it all while trying to lead a Patrol. In Part 1 you will be able to lean on the ASM in charge and learn from him. In part 2, that ASM will become you.

Time requirements: Being an ASM is an integral part of being a leader in a Boy Scout Troop. The ASM’s are a key strength of the troop adult leadership and we can never have too many. During phase 1, we want to see the adult coming as he/she can. As phase 2 is getting closer, time requirements will be less optional and more required.

A fully established ASM can expect his or her week/month/year to look like:

·         1 meeting once a week on Tuesdays from 5:45 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

o   Time at home in preparation

·         1 outing or activity a month, not all listed below in a given month.

o   Campout (Friday to Sunday)

o   Horseback riding

o   Canoeing

o   Rifle Shooting

o   Anything we can get into, well most anything J

·         As needed leader meetings (not very long, and once a month or every other month)

·         One week of Summer Camp per year

o   We work this out as long as we have the ratio of adults to youth required.

We have a great time of fellowship with each other and the boys. It is a very rewarding experience to watch them grow into young men. If you think you would like to be a part of our team, please contact Everett Young at (765) 265-2204 or send an email to BSTRoop31Scoutmaster@gmail.com We will get you set up for an interview with myself and the Committee.
