Recycling & Philanthropy

As Girl Scouts we strive to make the world a better place.  Here are two small ways we can teach our scouts about philanthropy and the importance of recycling, plus raise funds to help others and our troop.

1. CANS FOR CASH: Recycling drive to help the environment and support the community.
Earn $$$ for your aluminum beverage cans.

Please join Rexam as they participate in the 2013 America Recycles Day Aluminum Can Challenge to raise awareness and involvement in beverage can recycling. Start saving your used aluminum beverage cans and recycle with Rexam to receive cash. It’s a great way to raise money for your organization or charity. Recycle your cans at a special event price and enter our raffle drawing for prizes. Join us for a day of food, refreshments and recycling.

When:  September 2013 (date to be announced)

Time:    9am – noon

Where: 8770 West Bryn Mawr Avenue (At I-90 and Cumberland), Chicago, IL 60631

Contact: Nancy Mose, Rexam, 773-399-3948 or nancy.mose@rexam.com

We’re partnering with Rexam and United Scrap Metal, leading local recyclers, to gather as many beverage cans as possible and earn money for our troop and Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Chicago and Northwest Indiana.

Please support this recycle drive

2. POP TOP COLLECTION FUNDRAISING

Collecting pop tabs is a great way to teach kids about philanthropy and the importance of recycling, and raise funds to help children and their families at the same time. Many organizations raise thousands of dollars with their pop tab collections.

Why? We collect pop tabs, an easy way for people of all ages to support the Girl Scouts and know they are making a difference for families and children.

Where? Our girls can decorate collection containers for home, public spaces, friends or families, homes, etc.  They should be placed where they will receive the most tabs!!

How much? After the tabs are collected, Troop 41303 will bring the collection to a local recycling center. The recycling center will MATCH the value of our tabs and send a check to The Ronald McDonald House for the total value.

Still don't think it can make a difference? While it does vary, organizations have raised up to $30,000 a year through their pop tab programs. Now that is a lot of pop tabs! Did you ever think it could be so easy to help families in need?

Together we're making a difference and learning about the importance of recycling, and philanthropy.

3. 50 Cans, Do Something Campaign
    2013 - Oct 23 - Dec 18

STEP 1

  • Running a drive is way easier w/ friends. Assemble your crew by choosing friends that’ll bring different strengths to the table. Invite your friends to come donate or help you plan your drive.
  • Need some help getting your friends pumped? Share these stats with them to tell them why they should care.
  • Pick a location and make sure to get permission from whoever’s in charge of the space.

Step 2:

  • Now that you have a place and time picked out, let people know your drive is where it’s at.
  • Talk to your school newspaper, see if they’ll print a story about your drive.
  • Don’t stop advertising until the drive is over. Print flyers, send emails, create a Facebook group, blow up peoples’ walls.

Step 3:

  • On the day of your drive, make sure you’ve got enough bags, boxes etc. to collect cans (check with local grocery stores, restaurants etc to see if they’ve got some to spare).
  • Take lots of pictures of your drive.

Bring it home:

  • Upload your pics and tell us how many cans you collected.
  • Don’t stop there, share them with all of the people who helped you out and let them know what they helped you do.
