The Advancement Trail

On the advancement trail, a Cub Scout progresses from rank to rank, learning new skills as he goes. Each of the ranks and awards in Cub Scouting has its own requirements. As you advance through the ranks, the requirements get more challenging, to match the new skills and abilities you learn as you get older.

Every Scout starts at the Bobcat rank and must earn this badge before any other badge can be awarded.  However, the scout is allowed to work on his rank with his den while he is also working on the Bobcat Badge.

Cub Scouting is broken down in ranks according to the grade the boy is currently in school.  A boy is not allowed to 'go back' and earn ranks that he missed if he joined later than first grade.

1st Graders - Tiger

2nd Graders- Wolf

3rd Graders - Bear

4th Graders - Webelos

5th Graders - Arrow of Light

The Bobcat Trail

The first rank that EVERY boy MUST earn when entering the Cub Scouting Program is the Bobcat rank.

To earn the Bobcat rank the new Cub Scout must do the following:

  1. Learn and say the SCOUT OATH, with help if needed.

    "On my honor I will do my best
    To do my duty to God and my country
    and to obey the Scout Law;
    To help other people at all times;
    To keep myself physically strong,
    mentally awake and morally straight"

  2. Learn and say the SCOUT LAW, with help if needed.

    "A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly,
    courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty,
    brave, clean, and reverent."

  3. Show the CUB SCOUT SIGN.  Tell what it means.
  4. Show the CUB SCOUT HANDSHAKE. Tell what it means.
  5. Say the CUB SCOUT MOTTO. Tell what it means.

    "Do Your Best"

  6. Give the CUB SCOUT SALUTE.  Tell what it means.
  7. With your parent or guardian, complete the exercises in the booklet,
    How to Protect Your Children from Child Abuse: A Parent's Guide.

The above items are the basic information that ALL Cub Scouts must learn, which is why EVERY boy who enters into Cub Scouting MUST earn the Bobcat Badge.  He only needs to complete the course once in his Cub Scout career.

The Tiger Trail (getting started)

The first step on the Tiger Trail is to complete the requirements for the Bobcat Badge.  The Bobcat Trail is outlined at the beginning of every handbook in Cub Scouts.   Once completed and reported to your Den Leader, the Bobcat Badge will be awarded at the next Monthly Pack Meeting.

NoteThere are no performance requirements for completing tasks. Simply participating and doing one's best in an activity constitutes completion.

Note: Once a Bobcat, always a Bobcat... Once he earns his Bobcat Badge he can skip it in other handbooks as he advance through the ranks.
