Frequently Asked Questions

1.     At what age can boys join Cub Scouts?

Cub Scouting is for boys in the first through fifth grades,or 7 to 10 years of age. Boys who are older than 10, or who have completed the fifth grade, can no longer join Cub Scouting, but they may be eligible to join the Boy Scouting or the Venturing program.

 

2.     When do you accept new members?

We accept new scouts anytime during the year.  However,it is most common for boys to join at the start of a school year.

 

3.     How much does it cost to join?

About the same as one season of Park Ball.

The annual dues are $24/year and are prorated.  It will also be necessary to purchase the Cub Scouting uniform basics and initial handbook.

(If the pack meets its' fundraising goal for the year the$24/year membership dues will be paid for by the pack.)

Please note this is a one time cost.  Assuming that the Pack meets it's fundraising goal for the year it will buy the Neckerchief, Slide, and Handbook for the next rank. The Pack also pays for all awards and patches for the scouts.

 

4.     How do I sign my son up for Cub Scouts?

You can come to a membership drive (usually at the start of the school year) or pick up a youth-application form at A&R Paints and Crafts and mail / give it to a scout leader.

 

5.     What do I need to buy?

o        Uniform shirt (blue for Tigers, Wolfs, and Bears, tan or blue for Webelos)

o        Neckerchief and Neckerchief Slide

o        Belt  (recommended but optional)

o        Blue pants for Tigers, Wolfs, and Bears, khaki for Webelos if wearing tan shirt. (Pack 38 does not require the official B.S.A. uniform pants.)

6.     Where do I buy the Uniform and other stuff?

o        Locally at A&R Paints and Crafts

o        Council Scout Shop in Belleville

o        Online from the B.S.A. store

7.     What patches do I need?

o        Pack number"3" and "8"

o        World Crest

o        Counci lpatch

o        Den #(optional if there is only one den per rank)

8.     Where do the patches go on the uniform?

9.     How often do you meet?

The dens usually meet two times per month plus one pack meeting per month.
The Tiger dens also have one "Go See It" per month.

 

10. Where do you meet?

The Dens and Pack usually meet at Tri Township Park or Silver Creek Elementary School  but may meet at other local locations also.

 

11. When do you meet?

o        Den meetings are different days for each level.

o        Pack meeting are usually on a Friday evening.

o        Tiger Dens"Go See It's" may meet at other times as necessary (e.g. Saturday mornings).

 

12. Can parents attend the Den and Pack meetings?

o        Parents and family are encouraged to attend the Pack meeting.  Pack meetings are where the scouts will be presented the awards that they have earned, perform ceremonies, and take part in skits.

o        Parent or the Adult Partner is required to attend the Den meetings with the Tiger Cubs (1st grade).

o        Cub Scout den meetings are intended to be an activity for the individual boys. They are not designed to be a family activity.  However, parents are welcome to attend to observe their scout.  If you would like to participate in a den meeting, ask the den leader in advance so that the leader can plan a way for you to participate.

 

13. What is a Den and what is a Pack?

o        Scouts who join the pack are assigned to dens based on age: Tiger Cubs (first grade), Wolf Cub Scouts (second grade), Bear Cub Scouts (third grade) and Webelos Scouts(fourth and fifth grades).  Dens usually meet two to three times per month.

o        The Pack is made up of all the Dens and meets as a whole once a month.

 

14. What is a "Class A" and "Class B" uniform?

o        Class A uniform is the official B.S.A. uniform (shirt, neckerchief, slide, and belt).

o        Class B is the Pack 38 T Shirt (available at Collinsville Sports Store for $5-6) or any other scouting shirt.

15. How large is Pack 38?

We currently have about 55 scouts in our pack.

 

16. How large are the Dens?

The Dens in Pack 38 usually have 5 to 8 boys in them.

 

17. Who sponsors Pack 38?

Troy Lions Club is our charter organization.

 

18. What is the Pack Committee?

The Pack Committee meets at least once per month and oversees the Pack's operation and planning of events.  It is made up of the Committee Chair, Cubmaster, Den Leaders, and parent volunteers.
