Joining Pack 2

Any boy in the first through fifth grades is welcome to join Pack 2. Although Pack 2 is composed mostly of boys and families from Portland schools, anyone is welcome to join. Kindergarteners may sign up to be Tigers in May and begin June 1-st. The boy’s parent(s) must fill out a Cub Scout application, which can be obtained from the Cubmaster or any Den Leader. The completed application should be turned in to the Cubmaster or Pack Committee Chairperson.

Registration

The registration fee for joining Pack 2 is $30. This fee pays for registration with the Boy Scouts of America, unit insurance, an annual subscription to Boys’ Life magazine, Leader training, awards and some of our program costs. For new Cub Scouts, the registration fee should be turned in to the Cubmaster or Pack Committee Chairperson along with the completed Cub Scout application.

Uniforms

An essential component of Cub Scouting is the uniform. Cub Scouts are made to feel part of a group and have a place to display their awards when they wear their uniforms. There are two types of uniforms: the formal “Class A” and the informal “Class B”. “Class A” uniforms are the formal dress of Scouting, and are worn at Pack meetings and most Pack functions. “Class B” uniforms consist of a variety of Scouting-themed t-shirts, and are worn during times where the Cub Scouts are likely to be involved in physical activities or crafts. “Class-B” Scouting-themed caps may also be worn with “Class-B” t-shirts.

Official Pack 2 “Class-B” t-shirts, sweatshirts, and caps can be purchased from the Pack. Pack 2 provides a “Class-B” Pack t-shirt to all new Cub Scouts.

We will designate events beforehand as being “Class A” or “Class B” events so that you can plan appropriately. Although only Leaders can wear the official “Class A” Scouting uniform, we invite and encourage Pack parents to wear our Pack 2 “Class B” shirts.

The minimum “Class A” uniform in Pack 2 consists of the following:

* Uniform shirt appropriate for rank (Tigers and Cub Scouts wear blue shirts, Webelos wear tan)

* Uniform patches (Council, Pack number, Den number, World Scouting insignia, and rank)

* Neckerchief appropriate for rank (orange for Tigers, yellow for Wolves, blue for Bears, and plaid for Webelos)

* Neckerchief slide appropriate for rank

* Pack 2 hat

* Cub Scout belt (this is important to display Belt Loops that the Cub Scout earns)

Note: We do not require you to purchase the official Cub Scout pants or socks. You are certainly welcome to purchase these items if you would like, but we consider them to be optional parts of the Pack 2 uniform. We ask that the boys wear neat casual pants or shorts to “Class A” events if not wearing Scout pants.

Scholarships

Should fees or costs become an issue for your family, please contact the Cubmaster or Pack Committee Chairman. Scholarships (known as Camperships) are available through the Connecticut Rivers Council, and all requests will remain confidential.

Parent Responsibilities

When joining Pack 2, each parent or adult family member agrees to support their son in the following ways:

* See that he has the proper uniform and handbook.

* Assist him in attending bi-weekly Den meetings and monthly Pack meetings.

* Work with him to complete the achievements for his rank award.

* Return information forms and permission slips as required.

* Support his Den Leader as a resource person or substitute as asked.

* Help with Pack and Den functions when you are able.

* Provide input to the Den Leader or Pack leadership with regard to Den or Pack programming.

Parent volunteers are always needed. The costs of registration and training are covered by the Pack for those who are interested in serving as Leaders. If you’d like to help in any capacity, please contact the Cubmaster, Pack Committee Chairperson, or your son’s Den Leader. All types of help are needed—driving on trips, helping organize events, assisting in a Den Leader’s absence, etc.

Each year we ask each of the ranks to sponsor one of our larger events. The Dens in these ranks have the fun of planning and conducting the function, with the help of the Pack leadership staff. Don’t worry…you’re not on your own! We’ve done these events before, and have resource materials and contacts to assist you. Events are assigned as follows:

Month Event Rank

September Field Day Webelos II

December Holiday Party Tigers

February Pinewood Derby Webelos I

February Blue & Gold Bears

May Raingutter Regatta Wolves

Remember, Cub Scout Packs can not exist without volunteer assistance and leadership!
