Scoutmaster

Robert E. Marshall

Born August 8, 1970 in Painesville, OH, but grew up in NC.

Attended NC State University on an Air Force scholarship in fall 1988, but did not finish.

Married Candy Turner August 10, 1990. We have 2 grown boys, both living with us and both Eagle Scouts with Troop 459. Michael is 23 and Bryan is 21. Both boys remain registered to the unit.

I became a Stevedore in Wilmington in September of 1990 working for Ryan Walsh Stevedoring. We moved to Charleston in Sept 1997 when I took a job as a vessel planner for Mediterranean Shipping Company. Since then, I have been Planning Manager and Operations Manager for training and Special Projects. My new Title will be Regional Operations Manager, Southeast Region.

My career has allowed me to go to many interesting places on business (Wilmington, Southport, Morehead city, Norfolk, Charleston, Savannah, Mobile, Georgetown, Boston, New York, Miami, Freeport (Bahamas), New Orleans, Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Oakland, LeHavre (France), Geneva (Switzerland), Rome (Italy), Sorrento (Italy), Santo Domingo (DR).

I was a Cub Scout and Boy Scout in NC. I earned my Arrow of Light but only made it to 2nd class when I focused on AFJROTC instead. I started as a Scouter when Michael was in the first grade. His Tiger den did not survive the year. Then we tried again as a Wolf den in Pack 435. I became an “assistant” den leader for about a week until his den leader dropped out. I was a Den leader, Tiger leader, Webelos leader and Cub master with the pack. I became an Asst. Scoutmaster for Chris Lupton when Michael transferred to the troop in 2004. I became Scoutmaster when Chris “retired” in 2012. In addition to my unit activities I have been on the council Training staff for 12 years, served on the District Committee for 7 (last 2 as District Chairman) years and on the Council Executive board for 2 years. I have been on Wood Badge staff 7 times with the highlight being my turn to be Scoutmaster in 2011. I have received the District Award of Merit and the Silver Beaver for my contributions to Scouting in this Council.

I love this program and everything it stands for. In the beginning it was a good “excuse” for a workaholic dad to schedule some quality time with his boys but in time it became much more. I saw the value to our community of having good citizens who make good decisions based on positive values. The Scout Oath and Law are great tools to show young people how to develop their own moral compass. The vision of Scouting is important and I am proud that I may have made a difference to a few young people and adults through my participation in the Scouting Movement. And I get to go camping… What more could you ask?
