2011 Kinderhook District

PineWood Derby Championships

 

 

 

Eligibility:     All Registered Cub Scouts (Tigers, Wolves, Bears, and Webelos) in the Kinderhook District who qualified in their Pack Pinewood Derby are eligible to compete.

 

 

 

 

 

Entry Fee:     There will be a $5 dollar registration fee per car entered at the District Pinewood Derby to offset operational expenses.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Intent:          The spirit and intent of the Cub Scout Pinewood Derby is to foster a parent- son bonding experience during the building and racing of the Derby car and is not intended to be an exercise on who can spend the most money on cars and parts offered on E-bay or other online Derby suppliers.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

2010 Kinderhook District PineWood Derby Rules

 

 

 

Mechanical Details

 

With:                Overall width shall not exceed 2 ¾ inches.

 

Length:             Overall length shall not exceed 7 inches.

 

Weight:             Weight shall not exceed Five (5) ounces as measured on the official scale

 

Chasis:             Inside distance between the wheels shall be 1 ¾ inches minimum.

                        There shall be at least 3/8 inch ground clearance.

 

                        No part of the car may extent past the starting gate. The starting gate extends 1 inch above the track and must contact the front most point of the car.

                       

                        ***The original axle slots may be used or the wheel-base may be shortened or lengthened by drilling new axle locating holes in the chassis.***

 

Wheels:            Only Official BSA wheels from this year’s kits will be used.any color is permitted

                        Other Wheels such as those from PineCar, PinePro, Awana, S & W, Royal Ranger, Royal Ambassador, etc. will not be permitted.

                       

                        The plastic part lines on the wheels included in the kit may be sanded to ensure they are smooth. However, the wheels may not be narrowed or otherwise significantly altered such as by beveling, tapering, or wafering.

                        ***The running surface of each wheel must be flat and level. **

                        Drilling holes in the sidewall area of the wheel is not permitted.

 

                        ***Aftermarket lathe-turned wheels will not be permitted***

                        Each stock BSA wheel comes with a dimple on the tread surface.

                        There must be some evidence of this dimple at the time of the race.

 

                        The words “Made in USA” & “Official BSA” much be visible on the inside of each wheel and “BSA PineWood Derby” must be visible on the outside of each wheel.

 

 

Axles:               The axle nails may be deburred, filed, sanded, and polished to a mirror finish; however, only the Official nails supplied in the BSA kit can be used. No one-piece axles will be allowed.

 

                        The head of the axle nail must be left exposed and cannot be covered decals, hubcaps, tape or any type of covering.

 

Suspension:      The car shall not ride on any type of springs or suspension.

 

Attachments:     The car must be free wheeling with no stored energy or starting device aids (such as magnets or adhesive on the front of the car so that the starting gate is used to propel the car down the track.).

 

Lubrication:      ONLY powdered graphite can be used to lubricate the wheels. Grease. Oil, silicones, and liquid lubricants (Ny-Oil, Krytox, etc.) are prohibited.

 

Safety:              The use of mercury in the car is not allowed for safety reasons.

 

Paint:                Any car submitted with the paint still wet will not be allowed to participate. Vinyl body wraps are permissible; however, if used vinyl must be trimmed so that no portion of the wrap can touch any part of the wheels or wheel hub.

 

Details:             Cars entered for the race must use original materials from this year’s Official BSA kit (i.e. the wood block, wheels, and nail axles) to construct the basic car. Details such as steering wheel, driver, decals, painting, and interior details are permissible as long as these details do not exceed the maximum length, width, and weight specifications.

 

                        No loose materials of any kind are permitted in or on the car

 

                        The car may be hollowed out and built up to the maximum weight limit by the addition of lead, tungsten, or metal weights only --- provided they are securely attached to the chassis as moving parts are not permitted.

                       

                        Only newly constructed cars will be permitted to race. Cars constructed and raced in prior years will not be allowed and will result in disqualification.

 

 

 

Competition Rules:

 

Inspection:        Each car must pass inspection by the Official Inspection Committee before

                        it may compete.  The inspectors have the right to disqualify those cars

                        which do not meet the specifications.

 

Modifications:   No alterations or lubrication will be permitted after the official inspection.

                        Emergency repairs may be performed only with the permission and

                        supervision of the Race Committee.

Attendance:      The Cub Scout must be present when his car runs.

Awards:           The top three finishers in each Den Level will be awarded trophies and

            then will advance to the Kinderhook District Championship.

           

            The top three finishers in the Championship Race will also be awarded

            with trophies.

 

 

 

The goal of the District PineWood Derby Race Committee is to administer the rules and procedures of this Derby so as to provide a fun yet fair racing experience for each Scout and his parents. The Decisions rendered by the Derby Committee and the District Executive will be deemed as final and therefore non-protestable.
