Frequently Asked Questions

What are the age requirements for Boy Scouts of America ("BSA")?

A Boy Scout has to be:

1) at least 10 years old and have earned the Arrow of Light in Cub Scouts; or

2) at least 10 years old and completed the 5th grade; or

3) 11 years old and not yet 18 years old.

How do I become a Troop 2 Boy Scout?

You need to attend a Troop 2 meeting, submit a Boy Scout Youth Application and pay the registration fee.  The Youth Application is attached at the bottom of this page.  You can download the application, fill out the application, and bring it to a Troop 2 meeting.

What does it cost to join Troop 2?

The annual Troop fee is $139.00 which includes the yearly BSA registration.  The BSA Registration fee of $36 dollars needs to be paid when submitting the Youth Application.  The balance is determined and pro-rated according to the month of the year that you join, and that balance can be paid in full or in monthly payments.

There will also be additional costs and fees for camping and other activities.

What are the required supplies and uniforms items for Boy Scouts?

Troop 2 requires that a Boy Scout have the following:

An official Boy Scout Handbook;
An official Boy Scout Class A shirt (short or long sleeve);
An official BSA Bolo Tie; and
Green Convertible Pants (Official BSA uniform pants are optional.  Amazon.com has a pair of convertible pants at about $21.00).

Official BSA uniform items can be purchased at the BSA Scout Shop located at 7601 Lockheed Drive just east of Airway off Montana near the Airport.

Troop 2 also requires that official BSA Class B t-shirts be worn during camping trips, hikes, some Troop meetings and other casual events. These t-shirts are available for purchase from the Troop.

It is also highly recommended that Troop 2 Scouts invest in a pair of high-quality, waterproof hiking boots.

What other equipment is required for Boy Scouts?

A Boy Scout will need basic camping/hiking equipment including a sleeping bag and mat, tent, a mess kit, lantern, compass, water bottle or hydration pack, and a flashlight.  It is also suggested that a Scout purchase a good pair of hiking boots.

What does Troop 2 do?

Troop 2's strives to follow and achieve the BSA objectives of developing character, citizenship and personal fitness.

Troop 2 is a boy-lead organization with the adult guidance of the Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmasters.

Troop 2 meets once per week on Wednesday nights at the Scout Room of First Presbyterian Church from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m.

Troop 2's focus is to assist all Boy Scouts in achieving their goals and ranks, with the ultimate goal of earning their Eagle Rank.

Troop 2 plans at least one outdoor activity every month, including camping, hiking, fishing, biking and rafting trips.

Troop 2 encourages all Boy Scouts to attend a week-long BSA sponsored summer resident camp.  Troop 2 has attended Wehinahpay Mountain Camp (near Cloudcroft, NM), Gorham Scout Ranch (near Santa Fe, NM), Buffalo Trails Scout Ranch (near Ft. Davis, TX), Downling Acquatic Base Camp (Carlsbad, NM), Camp Fiesta Island (San Diego, CA) and Camp Emerald Bay on Catalina Island (right outside of Los Angeles).

Troop 2 also participates in several community service projects throughout the year including "Scouting for Food" which is the annual BSA canned food drive, Memorial Day Flag Placement at Ft. Bliss National Cemetery, leading the Rim Road 4th of July Parade and conducting U.S. Flag Retirement Ceremonies.  We also participate in the Adopt-A-River program which has Troop 2 helping to clean the Rio Grande River twice per year.
