For Every 100 Scouts

According to a Time Magazine poll conducted about 10 years ago...

For every 100 boys who join scouting.
  • One will save his own life with the information he gained in Scouts.
  • One will save someone else's life with the information he gained in Scouts.
  • Two will join the medical profession.
  • 10 will have their first contact with an organized religion through Scouting activities.
  • 2 will join the ministry or become key persons in their church or synagogue.
  • 2 will join law enforcement.
  • 10 will find a lifelong hobby or a career through the merit badge program.
  • 3 will obtain the Eagle Scout rank.
  • 16 will return as adult volunteers in Scouting.

In addition to that...

  • Every man to have walked on the moon was an Eagle Scout.
  • 75% of US Rhodes Scholars were Scouts.
  • 75% of FBI agents were scouts.
  • 80% of the graduates from all US military academies were scouts.
  • There are over 30 Eagle Scouts in the US Congress.

Impressive numbers. More impressive if you multiply this set of 100 Scouts by the factor of 140 and you have the 14,000 Scouts in the W. D. Boyce Council.

Character Development

Since its origin, the Scouting program has been an educational experience concerned with values. In 1910, the first activities for Scouts were designed to build character, physical fitness, practical skills, and service. These elements were part of the original Cub Scout program and continue to be part of Cub Scouting today. Character development should extend into every aspect of a boy's life. Character development should also extend into every aspect of Cub Scouting. Cub Scout leaders should strive to use the 12 points of the Scout Law throughout all elements of the program—service projects, ceremonies, games, skits, songs, crafts, and all the other activities enjoyed at den and pack meetings
