What is the structure of Cub Scouts?

Cub Scouts are organized as follows:

A Den is comprised of a group of boys in the same grade/age group.
There are five different dens based on rank/age as follows:
    Tiger Den - 1st grade
    Wolf Den - 2nd grade
    Bear Den - 3rd grade
    Webelos I Den - 4th grade
Webelos II Den - 5th grade

The Pack is comprised of the entire group of boys from all five dens - 1st grade through 5th grade.

What is the role of the Pack?

At the pack level, campouts, community events and other activities are organized.  Pack activities are generally very family-friendly and can be enjoyed by the various dens and their families no matter what the age.

Does the Pack meet as a group?

Yes, the pack meets monthly, September through June.  Monthly pack meetings are generally held the third Tuesday of the month.  The start time is 7:00 p.m and the meeting runs about 1 hour in length.  Some months the pack meeting will be combined with a pack event - for example, the month of our Pinewood Derby there will not be a separate Pack meeting.  This event will serve as our get-together meeting.  Please see the pack calender for schedule details.  Pack meetings are a time for the whole family to enjoy.

What are Den Meetings?

Den meetings are a time for the scouts to have fun with smaller group of friends of similar age. Dens are led by a team of adult volunteers.  Den leaders are usually adult family members of boys in the den. These meetings follow the scouting program and allow the scout to experience a wide variety of new activities and projects. This is also a time to work on accomplishments to be presented at the Pack Meetings.

How often do Cub Scouts meet in their Den?

Den meetings start in the month of September and run through May or June the following year. The day, time and place is coordinated by the den leader with input from parents of the scouts.

Do scouts go on any trips?

Optional trips and events take place throughout the course of the Scouting Year. These activities change from year to year, but past activities have included hikes, tours of the New Haven Coast Guard station and USCGC Eagle, overnight campouts at the Boston Museum of Science and Roger Williams Zoo, baseball, basketball games and hockey games to name a few.

What does it cost to join scouting?

Cost is $70.00 per scout per year paid to the Pack 495. This cost covers the annual fee to Boy Scouts of America and insurance.  Uniforms and books are an additional cost.

What do the scouts wear?

Blue Cub Scout Shirt, with US flag - long or short sleeve.  Note: Webelos have the option of wearing the blue or tan shirt.
We recommend short sleeve, so it can be worn year round.  The scout can always layer a long sleeve shirt underneath in cooler weather - we also recommend buying a larger size for this reason.  A larger size may also allow the scout to wear the same shirt multiple years - eliminating the need to buy a new shirt and transfer patches each year.

CT Yankee Council Patch
Pack 495 (red and white individual number patches)
World Scout Crest Emblem (purple patch with the fleur-de-lis symbol)
Den Number patch.  For 2014-2015, the den #'s are as follows:
        Tiger - Den 3
        Wolf - Den 5
        Bear - Den 2
        Webelos I - Den 4
        Webelos II - Den 1

Neckerchief and Slide (as appropriate for your rank)
Hat (optional - appropriate to your rank)
They will also need to purchase the handbook book appropriate for their rank.
