What Is Cub Scouting?

Cub Scouting is a year-round program uniquely designed to meet the needs of young boys and their parents.

The program offers fun and challenging activities that promote character development and physical fitness.

Service projects, ceremonies, games, and other activities guide boys through the core values and give them a sense of personal achievement. Through positive peer group interaction and parental guidance, boys also learn honesty, bravery, and respect.

Family involvement is an essential part of Cub Scouting, and parents are encouraged to play an active role in the program. Through interaction between parents, leaders, and friends, boys learn citizenship, compassion, and courage.

This family/community-centered approach to learning means that Cub Scouting is truly time well spent.

Where is Pack 2 located?

Cub Scouts Pack 2 is located in El Paso, Texas, and primarily serves the Kern Place / UTEP areas.  Pack 2 is chartered by the First Presbyterian Church on Murchison Street primarily recruits at Mesita Elementary School.  Most of the Pack 2 Scouts are students at Mesita Elementary, but it is open to any boy who wishes to join.  It is NOT required that you be a student at Mesita Elementary in order to join Pack 2.

Who can join Cub Scouts?

Elementary school-aged boys in 1st through 5th grades can join Cub Scouts.

Each grade level has its rank and is called a DEN.  These are the 5 different ranks and DENS:

  • Tiger Cubs. First-grade boys join a Tiger Cub den, where each boy works with an adult partner on the requirements to earn his Tiger Cub badge.

  • Wolf Cub Scouts. Second-grade boys graduate into a Wolf den. They go to den meetings, and their families still help them work on the requirements for the Wolf badge.

  • Bear Cub Scouts. Boys in the third grade are members of a Bear den. They also work with their families to do the requirements for the Bear badge, but boys at this age have enough knowledge and skill to take on more of the work by themselves.

  • Webelos Scouts. Boys in the fourth and fifth grades become Webelos Scouts. Webelos Scouts do more advanced activities to get ready to graduate into Boy Scouting.

The 5 different DENS make up the PACK.

When and Where are the Den & Pack Meetings?

Cub Scouts usually meet in their Dens 2 times each month on Mondays at our charter, the First Presbyterian Church.    A Den may also hold a special activity, such as a service project or field trip in place of or in addition to one of the Den meetings.

A Pack meeting is held for all Pack 2 Dens and their families once a month.  Our regular meeting place is the First Presbyterian Church at 1340 Murchison.  We usually meet on the 3rd Sunday of the month at 4:00 p.m.

The Pack meeting dates and locations are subject to change.  View the Pack Calendar tab or email us to get an idea of our itinerary for the year. Some dates may change as the year goes on and we use another system to actively track events and communicate those dates to members of our pack.

The Pack may also sponsor a special event such as a campout, the UTEP Basketball Scout Night, or a service activity as an additional event during the month or in conjunction with the Pack meeting.

What are some of the Pack 2 Events and Activities?

Pack 2 is very active, providing a rich environment for boys and their families.  In addition to the Den and Pack meetings, typical annual events and activities include:

  • Fall Camping Trip*
  • Mesita Elementary Fall Carnival "Haunted House"
  • Caroling at the Texas Veterans' Home & Holiday Party
  • Blue & Gold Banquet
  • Klondike Derby at White Sands

How Much Does It Cost?

The annual Pack 2 dues of $60 covers the National registration fee, Boys' Life Magazine, the Pinewood Derby kits, and all patches and awards for the year.

Additional costs include uniforms and some activity fees which can include camping fees and Summer Day Camp registration fees.

Individual Dens can also charge nominal dues to cover any Den related expenses.

Cub Scouts have one annual fund-raising activity (popcorn sales) in the Fall.  Money raised from popcorn sales helps cover Pack and Den costs for supplies and equipment.

A portion of the money raised from the popcorn sales is also credited to the Cub Scout's personal "Scout Account" which can be used to pay for many personal scouting activities, fees, and supplies.

There may also be a fee accessed by and paid to the Pack in lieu of selling popcorn.
