1-How old should a boy be to join Boy Scouts?
12 years old or have earned his Arrow of Light through Cub Scouts.
2-Does my son have to have been a Cub Scout to be a Boy Scout?
No, prior affiliation with any Scouting program is not required for him to
join the B.S.A.
3-Can I be active in my sons troop if I have no prior scouting or camping experience?
Absolutely. Any parent can be a member of the committee and assist with troop.
Prior Scouting or camping experience is not required. B.S.A. does require all active
adult members to complete Youth Protection training. This is available on line
or at various events at no cost and can usually be completed in under 30 minutes.
4- I am not familiar with many aspects of Scouting but I want to be involved?
B.S.A. offers many training courses for adults that encompass everything from how
to participate or run a committee to how to tie various knots.
5- Are Moms welcome?
Our troop welcomes any adult interested in working with their sons'
troop. We have Moms accompany us on Summer Camps as well as regular
camping trips.
6- Does my son need a uniform?
Currently 117 does want scouts to have a minimum of 1 class A shirt. Official Scout
pants, socks etc are not required. If a Scout does not have access to a shirt the troop
may assist in making one available.
7-Is there troop dues?
To help assist in the cost of our annual charter as well as cover merit badges,
materials, handbook, etc, there is a troop dues of $50.00 annually which can be paid
out monthly.
8-Are there other costs?
Camping trips cost an average of $20.00 per scout or scouter. This covers all food,
travel, and campground expenses. The troop recycles aluminum and sells firewood
to help supplement the troops budget.
9-What equipment does my son need for a camping trip?
The troop will provide tents and cooking gear for meals. The scout should
come prepared with weather appropriate clothing and boots. Sandals and
flip-flops are not allowed on camping trips. At a minimum the scout should have
a weather appropriate sleeping bag. Additionally the Scout should be able to bring
a plate, cup, utensils, flashlight, rain jacket, toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, soap,
hand towel), and water bottle. If the scout does not have access the troop does
have a limited supply of packs that can be lent out.
