The Pinewood Derby

The Pinewood Derby is one of the most popular and successful family activities in Cub Scouting. Pinewood derby cars are simple, small wooden models made by boys with help from their families, and raced in competition. The cars are gravity powered and run down a regulation track. Every boy designs and builds his own "Grand Prix" car to run on the track.  All participants earn a patch.

The Rules

Rules / Car Construction

Please read all these rules completely, since failure to comply with all rules will result in disqualification, as judged by the Pack 707 Race Committee.  These rules are the official Cub Scout (BSA) Pinewood Derby Rules, and have been adopted by our Pack so that winners may advance to District championships.

Rules Highlights

  • Only "Cub Scout Derby -- Grand Prix Pinewood Derby Kits" #17006 may be used. We will have them for purchase about 1-2 months prior to the Pinewood Derby.

    • If a mistake is made and a replacement kit is needed, additional kits may be purchased at the Scout Shop or possibly through the Cub Master.

  • Cars constructed for previous competitions may not be reused for this year's competition.

  • This is a Cub/Parent project. The parent may help ONLY with:

    • Shaping the car, especially where power tools are used

    • Placing the wheels on the car

    • Attaching lead weights to the car

The SCOUT should at least design, sand and paint the car. Remember that winning a race is secondary to having fun with your son building his car.

  • CAR SPECIFICATIONS:
    • Wheelbase: approximately 4-3/16 inches. The kit's axle slots must be used.

    • Wheel distance: approximately 1.75 inches between wheels.

    • Overall width: not exceeding 2.75 inches.

    • Overall length: not exceeding 7 inches.

    • Overall height: not exceeding 3 inches (to pass beneath electronic timers).

    • Chassis clearance: 3/8-inch minimum. DO NOT ADD WEIGHTS TO THE BOTTOM OF THE CAR without chiseling a recessed area for the weights to fit into.

    • Weight: not exceeding 5 ounces

  • Wheels can be sanded smooth but not grooved. The width and shape of the wheel tread cannot be changed, and wheels may not be hollowed out or otherwise altered, other than necessary to clean injection by-product, etc. The car may not ride on any type of springs, and must be freewheeling. Only wheels and axles provided with the official Cub Scout kit are to be used.  Only dry graphite may be used as lubrication.

  • ANY modifications to the wheels, such as hollowing them out or narrowing or rounding the tread or hubs, are prohibited.

  • Wheel bearings,
