              FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What are the requirements to join Cub Scouts?

Any boy in 1st thru 5th grade may join Cub Scouts.
The rules defined by BSA are:
TIGER CUBS- must be under the age of 8. Must have completed kindergarten or be in 1st grade, or age 7.

Cub Scouts - (Wolf & Bear) - Must have completed 1st grade but not 3rd grade, or be 8 or 9.

Webelos Scouts - Must have completed 3rd grade but not have completed 5th grade, or be age 10 but not yet 11 1/2.

The parent or legal guardian must consent to the Scout  joining Cub Scouts
as specified in the BSA Youth application.

You will need to fill out all necessary forms and pay all membership and related fees.

Tiger Cubs must have an Adult chaperone at all times during meetings and Den or Pack outings.

What does Scouting offer my son?

Boys learn honesty, bravery and respect through positive influences from family and group peer interaction. They gain a sense of personal achievement  and belonging through wearing the Cub Scout uniform, recognition and advancement as they are guided through the program. The Core Values of the program are taught through games, skits, ceremonies and other activities.

How does participation in Cub Scouting affect my  participation in other activities?

The Cub Scouting program is designed to compliment many other activities. Scouts generally meet 2-3 times a month for Den Meetings, and once a month for a Pack meeting.

Scouts who participate in sports (like Soccer, Basketball, Baseball) or academics activities (like chess, music, art, science) can be recognized and awarded Belt Loops or Pins through the Cub Scouts Sports and Academics Program. Belt Loops are worn on the Scouts uniform.

We encourage our Scouts to attend and participate in as many Scouting activities as they are able, however we realize that families must often juggle multiple events. We encourage Scouts and their Parents to work closely with their Den Leader and Cubmaster to ensure that the Scout is progressing at an acceptable rate. While many requirements can be completed at home, there are some that the Scout must participate in with his Den or a group.

What are my responsibilities as a Parent?

Cub Scouting is a family oriented program, thus Parent involvement is crucial to your son's success as a Scout. Parents are expected to:
  • Help with projects
  • Attend Pack Meetings with their Scout
  • Attend Outings and Field Trips with their Scout
  • Be an active participant in the Pack (Committee)
  • Provide support for your son's Den and pack
Can siblings attend?

We know it may be difficult to attend without "siblings in tow", therefore siblings are gladly welcomed! Remembering that the meetings are to help the boy learn and grow, siblings are welcome. We do not expect Den Leaders to babysit siblings, however. Den Leaders plan and prepare crafts and activities for the den members present. Please bring a quiet activity to keep your other child or children happy, and we will do our best to include siblings in our activities when possible.

The same applies for field trips and our Cub outings. Some field trips may be very friendly towards younger siblings in tow, while others may not be as appropriate. Any concerns should be discussed with the Den Leader in advance.  Most of our Pack outings and camping trips are very friendly for the entire family.

Do Cub Scouts go camping?

Yes. As a Pack, we go "family camping", which means a Parent or the entire family is present. Many of our families are first time campers when they join Scouts. If you don't own a tent, don't worry! We can usually find a "loaner".
Webelos Scouts are able to attend campouts that prepare them for entering the Boy Scout program, with slightly different restrictions than Cub Scouting.

What kind of activities do you participate in?

We schedule a variety of fun and exciting activities to keep our Scouts active and happy. Examples of some of our events include:

  • Raingutter Regatta
  • Water Bottle Rocket Launch
  • Water Fun Day
  • Campouts (examples have been Noccalula Falls, Clear Creek, Davy Crockett, USS Alabama, Dismal Caverns)
  • Day trips and hikes (examples have been Cathedral Caverns, Natural Bridge, Hurricane Creek Park)
  • Pinewood Derby
  • Blue & Gold Banquet
  • Special Outings - like to the Indian Mounds or Snake & Reptile Show
  • Participation in local parades
  • Council & District Events - like the Fishing Rodeo or Cub Haunted
  • Service Projects

Do we have to purchase a uniform?

Yes, Scouts wear a uniform because it identifies us openly with the principles by which we are committed: character development, citizenship training and mental and physical fitness.

Upon registering with our Pack and orientation, families will be given a checklist of uniform items they will need to purchase.
Although we love to see our Scouts in uniform at all meetings, we ask that all Scouts have a uniform by time we participate in the Veteran's Day Parade in November.

Where can I purchase a uniform and supplies?

Scouts may purchase a new uniform either locally at the Huntsville Scout Shop, online at Scoutstuff.org, or pick up a used uniform online somewhere like ebay. Our Pack maintains a Used Uniform Closet for families who need assistance with obtaining a uniform.

How much will it cost?

The annual Pack 68 dues are $28 for new Scouts, and $23 for returning Scouts. This cost includes their membership in BSA and a Pack 68 Class B T-Shirt.  Boys Life magazine is available for an additional $16 per year, and is highly recommended for our Scouts.

Parents are encouraged to purchase a Pack 68 T-Shirt to wear at our Pack outings. This helps identify us as a group on trips. T-Shirts are available for $8 each.

Our Scouts participate in one fundraiser a year, which is our Trails End Popcorn. The money raised from this covers awards, equipment and supplies used for Den and Pack activities.

Other costs include those for uniforms and activity fees such as those for Summer or Resident Camps and some Pack outings.

How often do you meet?

Dens generally meet 2-3 times a month and our Pack meets once a month for a Pack meeting. Otherwise, there may be special events where your Den participates in a service project or special meeting, or our Pack schedules a special activity or outing.
