Pack 4022 – Ridgebury: Holds Blue & Gold Banquet

As the noontime hour approached on February 9, 2013, boys and their parents began to filter into the gymnasium area of the Bentley Creek Wesleyan Church.  After the snow the day before, everyone was excited to get to the church on time.  They came for various reasons, but mostly to see if the hard work they put into their pinewood derby cars could best the efforts of their friends.

The event started with some antics from the Cubmaster and a brief review of some incredible scouts.  All the Cub Scouts then participated in a very well done and respectful flag ceremony.  Shortly after a presentation on Friends of Scouting and grace, the families enjoyed a covered dish dinner and ham.  After the meal, the boys were awarded badges, belt loops and pins in recognition of their efforts made towards ranks and achievements.  The top three popcorn sellers were recognized and awarded gifts from the pack for their great job in helping their pack go.  It was then time to decorate some cookies and prepare for the race!

The race officials had qualified all the entering cars for the race.  Upon completion of the races, each first place winner was awarded a trophy.  Trophies were also awarded for design efforts as well.  Below are the final results.

Local Cub Scout Pack Races for the Fun of It!

On Tuesday, October 2nd, Cub Scout Pack 4022 of Ridgebury, PA held their first Cub-anapolis.  This is a race of a different sort that resulted in many positives for the youths and the Pack.

For the two weeks prior to the event the boys worked together in teams; new boys with older boys.  The boys worked together to create their team car, number and name along with team vests and team cheer.  The boys made invitations to the race which they handed out to their friends at school, church or other youth groups.  The new boys had a chance to meet the other members of the Pack and work collaboratively together.  The older boys were able to help the younger boys to do some of the more complicated parts of the build as well as become more comfortable within the Pack.

On race day, an invocation was given by Pastor David Fife, seasoned Pastor of NASCAR race invocations.  As the boys began their race, music and color commentary was provided by one of the family members of the Pack.  With each lap the driver made, he had to pull into the “pits” and have his team mates help him change his “tires” by swapping shoes, “fuel” up by drinking a juice box, and “wash” by being spritzed with water as they passed through a “car wash”.  Each team mate had a chance to race and rotate through the pits with his other team mates.

At the conclusion of the race, each boy was a winner and was awarded a car shaped box with prizes.  They then had the opportunity to check out a real race car and meet with local racer, Sonny Terry of Towanda, PA.  The rumble of the engine was enough to get the blood running in many of the boys and their fathers!

A dinner was shared with all the friends and families that had attended.  Badges and awards earned during the summer from various Pack events and Scout camp programs were presented to the boys during the conclusion of the meal.  Included were badges for recruiting as a new youth joined the Pack that evening.

The leaders and youths of the Pack would like to thank all the family and leaders that helped to bring this fun event together; thank you to Pastor Dave Fife, Sonny Terry and Don’s Pressure Washing for their added level of excitement to the event; and thank you to God for providing clear and warm weather for the event.

Pack 4022 Picnic & Auction

The date is June 23, 2012 and it is a beautiful and sunny afternoon on the top of Mt. Pisgah, one of three Bradford County parks and one of the highest point in Bradford County at 2278 feet above sea level.  The aroma of hot dogs and hamburgers cooking on an open fire dances on the breeze.  The voices of youth and adults can be heard laughing, cheering and clapping.  Cub Scout Pack 4022 of Ridgebury, PA is enjoying the day together with a family picnic and a pack auction.

Since October of last year, the boys in the Pack have been earning money, Pack 4022 money, for their attendance, good behavior and abiding by the Pack guidelines.  These guidelines are rules that they themselves established at their October Pack meeting.  Rules like, “Listen”, “Follow Directions”, “Be Respectful”, “Try New Things” along with being helpful and cleaning up after den and pack meetings, the boys found not too difficult to follow.  Even attending trips and community service projects helped each boy earn his money.  Each boy had to be responsible for his own actions and earn his own pack money and not lose it.  Any lost money would not be replaced.

At this past Saturday’s picnic the boys were able to spend what they earned.  A collection of toys and camping basics were available for the boys to bid on and win.  These prizes were a collection of items that were donated by a few of the Cub Scout families as well as items discounted or donated by several local businesses.  A few of the items available for bid were 2 new bicycles, a fishing pole and hat, LED lanterns and flashlights, multipurpose pocket tools, a nicely equipped tool box, and an assortment of toy cars, building blocks and lawn games.

While tensions ran high during the bidding of items, the boys all came out happy winners with their hands, hearts and bellies all fully rewarded from the day.  At the end of the day, the families that remained to clean-up rewarded themselves with swimming in the public pool at Mt. Pisgah State Park.  If you would like to know more about Scouting in the Ridgebury area or would like to donate anything to the boys for next year’s auction, you may contact Jamie Swetland at 570-596-4418.

The boys and families of Pack 4022 would like to thank God for the wonderful weather and surroundings of the day.  In addition their warm gratitude to East Smithfield Hardware, Kennedy’s Country Heating, Bryan’s Meat Cutting, Lowes of Sayre, Kmart of Sayre and the families and friends of the Pack that helped to make the prizes and auction a wonderful and rewarding experience.  Thank you to the Bradford County Commissioners office for the use of the Mt. Pisgah County Park for the day.

Earth Day News: Turning the Tables

What do you have when the children of your community take time out of their day from playing to cleaning up after the adults?  You have Scouts.  Girls and boys that are registered members of the Girls Scouts of the USA and Boy Scouts of America.

This year in Ridgebury Township, the Girl Scout Troop 40856 and the Cub Scout Pack 4022 of Ridgebury spent their afternoon celebrating Earth Day, April 22nd, by cleaning up the roadsides of the township.  It began by meeting and handing out gear at the Ridgebury Township building.  They split up into three groups to be able to cover a broader area of the township.  One group of Girl Scouts started on Ridgebury Road above Ridgebury Lake and worked their way to the Berwick Turnpike.  One group of Cub Scouts started on top of Doty Hill Road and worked their way down the Berwick Turnpike.  A group of the smaller boys and girls worked a length of Monkey Run road, past their soon to be shuttered Gladys Burnham school to the Berwick Turnpike.

In three and a half hours over 60 bags of garbage were collected from from the roadsides.  When one scout was asked what they picked up the most often, he stated, "'Fast Food' wrappers and bags, non-winning lottery tickets, and beer cans."  The last item he said scared him the most because he didn't know if it was the passenger or the driver that may have been drinking the beer.

As the weather became sharply colder and the rain began to get heavier, the Scouts returned to the Bentley Creek Wesleyan Church.  The church opened their doors to share their warmth with the helpful children of the community while the Scout leaders prepared meats on a grill outside and warm dishes from parent were passed around inside.

While the weather precluded the Scouts from collecting all the garbage along the Berwick Turnpike, it is their hope that by setting a good example that other members of the community will stop discarding items along the roadside.  The litter that was picked up was sorted into glass, aluminum and garbage as it was collected.  The Scouts will send as much as possible to be recycled through the county’s recycling program, reducing the amount that must be sent to the landfill.  One more way the scouting organizations are helping all of us to reduce our footprint on the Earth.
