Webelos General Information

Webelos I

During 4th grade the goal is to earn the Webelos Badge. The requirements for the Webelos Badge are outlined in the Webelos handbook pages 49-51. Attending some of the den meetings is enough for them to earn the Webelos Badge by the end of the school year. We do this by completing the citizenship, fitness and traveler (elective) activity badges which are required to earn  the Webelos Badge.

I encourage parents to work at home on earning the other badges, especially if your scout is interested in earning the Arrow of Light Award (read more below). For example, Sebastian completed his aquanaut activity badge during the late summer/early fall.

Webelos II

During the 5th grade the goal is to earn the Compass Points Emblem Badge . The requirements for the Compass Badge and arrow point(s) are outlined in the Webelos handbook on page 61. Attending some of the den meetings is enough for them to earn the Compass Points Emblem Badge by the end of the school year and possibly one of the arrow point(s). This is done by completing four activity badges.

Arrow of Light Award

This is the highest award for a cub scout and it involves some commitment on behalf of the scouts and their parents. This is comparable to the Eagle Scout award for a boy scout. In addition, the Arrow of Light Award recipients for Pack 212 will have their names inscribed in the Arrow of Light Award plaque that sits in the MDS office wall.

To earn this award it is REQUIRED that the Webelos scout complete the requirements outlined in the Webelos handbook pages 63-64. The requirements in the Webelos handbook need to be signed off by your cubmaster in order to earn this award. Attending den meetings is not enough to complete the requirements. It takes some at home work with the parents. The cubmaster will sign-off the requirements that the parent and/or cub scout indicate they have completed.

Please talk to your cubmaster about any questions or assistance in completing the Arrow of Light Award. This award will be given at the end of the Webelos II academic year to each scout that completes the requirements.
We try to cover some of the requirements at the den meeting, but the rest needs to be completed at home.

Flag Ceremony Requirement

Requirement #6, for the Webelos Badge (Webelos handbook page 49) requires that each Webelos conduct a flag ceremony for the den or pack. I will be asking each Webelos to practice and lead a flag ceremony during the school year. Please practice the flag ceremony with your Webelos by reading the instructions posted in the Flag Ceremony page. The Webelos scout does not need to memorize the ceremony. They can print the Flag Ceremony commands and read them. But they will be required to know what needs to be done for each of the commands.

Badger Patrol Badge

The Webelos do not have an 'animal' to represent them, so they voted during our first den meeting and chose to be the badger patrol. I will hand them the badger badge during our next meeting. They should place this badge on the right sleeve of their shirt uniform. Below the flag.

Uniform

Your Webelos cub scout can wear the tan shirt to differentiate them from the Bears, Wolves and Tigers. But they are also allowed to wear their dark blue Bear/Wolf/Tiger shirt if they wish. They should get the Webelos neckerchief and the Webelos neckerchief slide. The Webelos hat and pants are optional. The boys tend to not wear the hat after a short while. And they tend to outgrow their pants. Wearing the MDS dark blue pants is sufficient.

This is the list of badges and their placement in a Webelos shirt uniform.
  • World Crest emblem (purple/blue). Above the left pocket. You can reuse this badge from their previous uniform.
  • Bobcat, Wolf and Bear badges. On left pocket. Your cub scout should have earned these already. I bought badge magic from the cub scout store to iron them on the left pocket. A better alternative, is to buy a plastic badge holder for all three badges. It also has space for the Webelos Badge they will earn in 4th grade. The plastic holder attaches to the button of the left pocket and can be removed at any time.
  • Silicon Valley Monterey Bay Council badge and Pack number 212 on left sleeve. You can reuse the pack numbers from their previous uniform. You can also reuse the old Monterey Council badge or purchase the new Silicon Valley Monterey Bay one. Your choice.
  • (Optional) You can place the den number badge under the flag. We only have one den, so it's "Den 1".
  • (Given to your scout at the den meeting. Do not buy) The Badger badge goes on the left sleeve, under the den number badge, or directly under the flag.
  • Blue shoulder loops, for both left and right shoulders.
