The Cub Scouts have many activities to be enjoyed by them and their families.  Cub Scouts activities include camping, skiing, Pinewood Derby racing, fishing, canoeing, and shooting bows/arrows and guns. Den leads work with the Den parents to complete these activities and also track them towards completing the requirements in the Scouting Handbooks. Parents are a huge part of creating and sustaining successful Packs, so they are encouraged to attend Den meetings and contribute to all activities.

Activities We Completed!

On this page, we provide follow-up to some of the big activities from the Cub Scout calendar. To see upcoming calendar activities, go to the Calendar page of this website.  A big thank you to the Scout leaders and parents who work together to make these activities successful!   More pictures:  to see even more pictures, log into this website and visit the New Photo Gallery page on the Private Site.

4/12 - 13/2014. Family Camp Out at Camp Snyder.  Great fun was had by all the families that attended! Tents we were pitched, lots of good food.  The pictures tell the rest of the story.

3/8/2014.  Pinewood Derby 2014.  Another great day for the Pinewood Derby with really warm weather.  The Derby was attended by our Pack with about 11 Scouts racing their cars which were fast as well as creative (see picture below left).  Parents were also well represented (see picture below right).  Overall, the cars did very well with the Pack taking 2nd, 3rd, and 4th places in the race (see picture right).  As a reminder, the Pack took 4th place in the 2013 Pinewood Derby and took 1st, 2nd, and 4th places in the 2012 Pinewood Derby. Congratulations to all the Scouts who raced their cars and to the parents who spent the time working with their Scouts to get ready to compete!

2/8/2014.  Blue and Gold Banquet.  The Blue and Gold Banquet is considered the most exciting event on the Cub Scout calendar.  The Banquet is to celebrate Cub Scouting.  This includes celebrating the achievements of the Scouts as well as celebrating the Scout leaders and the parents of the Scouts.  So, yes, the Banquet in the Northminster Church Hall was indeed a celebration. Along with their families, 17 Cub Scouts were at the Banquet.

To kick-off the Banquet, the Bears led the Flag Ceremony, followed by the Lighting of the Candles, done by the Webelos.  After the Candle Lighting, the Den Skits were performed (each Den did a skit that showcased the strength of the Den).  Following the Skits, the food was blessed for dinner which was contributed by the parents and included salads, meats, noodles, desert, and even French fries (especially popular with the Scouts and a few parents).

During dinner, the Scouts and their families were treated to some wonderful and encouraging remarks from the Banquet speaker. An Eagle Scout, the speaker connected with the Scouts and encouraged them to push forward and apply themselves as leaders at home, at school, and in their communities. The speaker also reminded the Scouts of an important life lesson: be early is best; being ontime means you are late; and being late means that you did not even show-up.

The parents participated in the program by saying out loud, the Cub Scout Parents Prayer (see below). The Scout Benediction was said after the Parents Prayer and then the program ended.  We will see everyone again for the next Blue and Gold Banquet in 2015.

Cub Scout Parent Prayer: Look down upon my son, dear Lord, this smiling Cub of mine.  Please take his hand along the way, so that he may never stray. Bless my son tonight, dear Lord, and help him walk with thee. Give him comfort, warmth and love; He's all the world to me.  Bless his daily efforts, and make them strong and true; for life's a heavy burden, And we're all in need of you.

2/2/2014. Scout Sunday and Bake Sale.  Our Cub Scouts represented at Scout Sunday at the Northminster Presbyterian Church. The participation of the Cub Scouts in the church service included collecting offering and leading the Church in singing 'We Shall Overcome'. The picture below left shows the Scouts leading the congregation in the 'We Shall Overcome' song. The Boy Scouts from Troop 24 also participated in the church service.

Immediately following the Church service, the Cub Scout bake sale was held. If you had a sweet tooth, the sale was sure to satisfy it!!  The items were all delicious (as reported by those who did the eating). Below right are pictures of some of the items donated for the bake sale.  The bake sale raised over $200.00 - well done!!

1/25/2014.  Ski Trip to Whitetail. It was a great day for skiing and snowboarding!  We had 12 Cub Scouts who attended. Most of the Scouts were in the all day Kids Mountain Class for snowboarding and a few took the Kids Mountain Class for skiing.  The parents on the other hand, participated in the group package and some of us hit the slopes while others hung out in the lodge :) The pictures below show some of our Scouts who all had a really good time.

11/16/2013. NBC Studio visit. The tour of the NBC Studio Washington DC was a phenomenal success!  It was very well supported by the Pack and it was really a great experience for the Scouts.  Along with their parents, the Scouts received a tour of the studio which included the control room from where what we see on TV is monitored and honed for our viewing pleasure.  The studio personnel were very  nice and welcoming, from the guard who got us situated in the waiting room, to the stage manager who got us to clap our best, to the host, Hillary Howard who was gracious enough to publicly acknowledge Pack 24 Scouts sitting in the studio audience!

The approximately 13 Scouts who attended were also part of the television audience for the taping of the 'It's Academic' program which will air on January 4, 2014 at approximately 10:30 a.m. ET on of course, the NBC local station.  Check it out to see the Scouts on television cheering on the competing schools.  The group picture at right shows the Scouts with the It's Academic host, Hillary Howard who also has hosting duties on WTOP.

11/2 & 9/2013.  Scouting for Food. November is the National Scouting for Food month, and for another year, Troop 24 fanned out in the Shepherd Park neighborhood to collect food donations that is desperately needed by many families in the area. The food collected was distributed from a central location (Safeway Supermarket on Georgia Avenue, NW) on 11/9/2013. The picture at right shows the Boys and Cub Scouts with food that they collected.  Well done Troop 24!!

10/19/2013. Camp Snyder Fall Outdoor Expo.
The Expo was truly fun for the Scouts who were able to attend!  Many different Troops attended and some even camped overnight in the woods.  The activities enjoyed by the Scouts included rock wall climbing, archery (shooting bow and arrows), shooting guns, fishing (catch and release), and participating in sports stations such as golf and football. There was even a sand box (a very large one) where anyone could dig around to find gems (fake ones!).  The Scouts had the option of just exploring the grounds and enjoying the wide open expanse of grassy land.  There were also a variety of booths to include one on the STEM program.

If you did not want to walk around several acres of land to each of the different activities, you could just relax, or do arts and crafts:  there was a well stocked arts and crafts station visited mostly by the moms.  The dads went off to do some thing else with the Scouts like throwing an axe at a block of wood (the goal was to make the axe stick in the wood)...yes, this was actually one of the activities!

Keep Camp Snyder in mind for upcoming events such as their summer camp because it can significantly help your Scout complete many requirements in the Scouting Handbook.

Below are pictures of Pack 24 Scouts participating in the various activities at the Expo.

10/5/2013.
Shepherd Fall Fest.  It felt like a summer day more than a fall day!  The Cub Scouts represented very well at the Shepherd Fall Fest on 10/5/13. The rope bridge (picture to right) was very popular with the kids (boys and girls alike)!  Several Scouts had their cars out and racing on the track that was set-up right across from the rope bridge.  Many people (Scouts and non Scouts) raced cars (Marcus had some extra cars to go round). At Fall Fest, several families completed Scouting Interest cards.

The picture located below left shows one of the NCAC representatives securing the rope bridge, and the other picture below right shows the track that was set-up and heavily used by the children.

9/18/2013. Recruiting at Shepherd Elementary.
Recruiting at Shepherd's Elementary Back to school night on 9/18/13 was very successful! A total of 7 families expressed strong interest in joining Cub Scouts and some have since attended Cub Scout meetings and other activities.
