Den Structure

The Cub Scout Pack has 4 Dens: Tiger; Bear; Webelos; and Wolf. Each Den is managed by parents and each Den meeting includes focus on merit and advancement. Den leader activities are primarily: training; prepping activities for upcoming den meetings. The Handbook for each of ranks (Tiger; Bear; Wolf; Webelo) provide the details of activities that can be completed by each Den. Some activities are completed as a Den (indoor or outdoor) and some are completed outside of the Dens by the Scouts with and their families. The activities go towards merit and advancement to the various ranks.

The parents who run these Dens are the primary drivers of success in these Dens. The parents provide guidance for the boys, and keep them on track to achieving their badges for the various ranks. Parents are expected to complete training (Youth Protection at a minimum) and schedule Den activities for the upcoming Den meetings. The rank Handbooks identify all the activities to be completed: the Den parents simply have to coordinate these activities (get supplies; communicate with other Den parents; track achievement).

Advancement

Each Cub Scout works towards earning badges. The Den structure allows the Scouts to be more focused on the badges to be achieved.

First badge earned: Bobcat Badge. This is the first badge earned by a boy upon joining Cub Scouts. Additional badges are earned as he advances through the various ranks of Cub Scouts. Those ranks are, in order of progression, Tiger, Wolf, Bear, and Webelo. See the table below for details on each of these ranks.

Tiger Badge
earned by Cubs when they meet the requirements in the Cub Scouts Tiger Handbook. The Tiger Handbook also contains information on the Bobcat badge. See here for the Handbook references:

To move to the rank of Tiger, the Cub Scout must complete the Bobcat requirements, which include demonstrating his understanding of Scouting's core values. The Scout must also be able to recite the Cub Scouts Promise, Law of the Pack, and motto and demonstrate the Cub Scouts sign, handshake, and salute. He must also explain what each of these ideals means, in addition to demonstrating his understanding of the core values of honesty and trustworthiness, and explaining their importance. Source for the Bobcat requirements is the Tiger Handbook
