This information is intended to get parents started when they first join Pack 24 Cub Scouts, and is also intended to keep them informed and going as they move through Cub Scouts.

Get Started

Keep Going

The information below is intended to help you get started.

1. Attend Cub Scout meeting. Ranks of Tiger, Wolf, and Bear meet on Friday evenings from 7pm -8pm ET.  Rank of Webelos 1 & 2  meet on Saturday mornings from 8:30 - 10 a.m. ET. Meetings are held at Northminster Presbyterian Church, 7720 Alaska Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20012.

(Church is located at the intersection where Alaska, Kalmia, and Georgia Ave meet. You can park and enter the church from the alley behind the church. The meeting room is on the 2nd floor.)

At your first meeting, you will be given the calendar of Den and Pack meetings. Den meetings are for Scouts of the same rank (Tiger; Wolf; Bear; Webelos) and their parents, and Pack meetings are for all Scouts and their parents.

2. Register in Pack 24. The Cub Master or Assistant Cub Master has the registration forms to be completed and the fees to be paid (see also the Cub Scout Fees.jpg document attached to this page). You can visit the Pack 24 meeting to get the registration forms and pay the fees. You can also reach Assistant Cub Master Marcus Hall (marcushall19@aol.com) with questions on registration and fees. Registration has to be completed at the start of each Scouting year, which typically corresponds to the start of the school year.

3. Visit Scout store.  Use this link to find a Scout store near you: http://www.capitolhillscouts.org/ScoutStr.htm.

4. Purchase Cub Scout Uniforms. Once the Scout has registered, he will need the proper uniform. The Scout store will direct you on what uniform to purchase based on the rank (Bobcat; Tiger; Wolf; Bear; Webelo) of your Scout. Tell the store that you are with Pack # is 24 (you will need the '24' patch for the shoulder of the uniform top. Also ask the Scout store for the guide sheet on how to sew the patches on the uniforms.

5. Purchase Handbook. Each rank of Cub Scouts has a handbook that gives you full details on that particular rank. The ranks are (in order of progression after joining Cub Scouts): Bobcat, Tiger, Wolf, Bear, and Webelo.  Bobcat information is contained in the Tiger Handbook. The Handbook identifies the activities to be completed in order for the Scout to advance through the various ranks.  Within Cub Scouts, the various Dens (Tiger; Wolf, Bear, and Webelo) are structured to help the Scouts complete these activities. See the 'Dens and Advancement' link on this website for more information. Purchase the Handbooks at the Scout store.

6. Take Training. There is required training for the parents. At a minimum, the Youth Protection Training has to be completed. Use links below to access training.

- Youth Protection Training is required. Located at http://olc.scouting.org/courses/ypt2.
Provide (hard copy; scanned/emailed) the certificate for the completed training to the Cub Master (Barry Hudson) or to the Assistant Cub Masters (Marcus Hall; Leslie Jones) for processing with the NCAC.

- Other training courses located here:

7. Read information on protecting your Scout:

http://www.scouting.org/filestore/ypt/pdf/46-015.pdf

8.
Get access to Cub Scout website. Although you can access the Public Site of this website, you will need a user name and password to access the Private Site for information such as the Scout roster, parents information, and the full calendar. Send access request email to the website administrator, leoniestephenson86@yahoo.com.

Once you have started, the information below should help to keep you informed and keep you going.

1. Attend Cub Scout meetings.
Although many meetings will be conducted as separate Den meetings (Tigers; Wold; Bear; Webelo), there will also be overall Pack meetings attended together by everyone in the Pack. Get to know your Den lead so you can keep in touch with him / her.

2. Connect with other parents. The Pack parents are listed (names; email addresses) in the Pack 24 website. The parent information is not accessible on the top, public page, but you will need to log into the website. The log in link is located on the front page of the website. You will also get to connect with parents at the various scouting activities.

3. Track your Scout's advancement. The Handbooks have the activities to be completed for advancement through the ranks, and the Handbooks also provide space in which to manually update the activity that has been completed. The Den lead will also work with the parent to track this information so it can be used to advance the Scout to the next rank for the next school year.

4. Keep Cub Scout roster and parent profile updated. Log into this website to see the roster of Cub Scouts (rank; Den associations; etc.) and parent profile.

5. Be aware of calendar. There is a full calendar with monthly activities that include meeting dates (Den and Pack) that is contained in the Pack 24 website. The full calendar of activities is not accessible on the top, public page, but you will need to log into the website. The log in link is located on the front page of this website.

6. Support activities. Cub Scouts is intended to be an interactive experience where parents participate in activities. For example, parents  attend and stay at Cub Scout meetings (Den and Pack); they camp with their Scouts; they work with their Scouts to complete activities in the Handbooks; and they volunteer their time on activities listed in the calendar.

7. Receive Ongoing communication on Pack 24 Cub Scouts There are also emails that are sent (as needed) to parents with pertinent/timely information.

8. Transition to Boy Scouts from Cub Scouts. When the Cub Scout journey has been completed, the Cub Scout can transition to Boy Scouts and begin a new journey which includes becoming an Eagle Scout. The Boy Scouts for Troop 24 also meet at Northminster Presbyterian Church. The Cub Master / Assistant has information on the cross over from Cub Scout to Boy Scout.
