Tin foil meals are a great way for a patrol to prepare at home for their next outing.

Here are some tips for preparing tin foil meals:

1)  Use heavy duty tin foil or wrap twice when using regular tin foil.

2)  To lesson some food from sticking you can use spray cooking oil or brush on a thin layer of vegetable oil.

3)  Thin meat cooks faster so if you keep your choice of meat to 1/2 inch thick or less you will be eating sooner.

4)  Put meat on the bottom of your foil meal.

5)  I do not recommend uncooked chicken for a foil meal. Precooked chicken can be used.

6)  A tin foil meal can be a precooked meal. Example: seasoned chicken, rice and vegetable. Prepare (cook) at home wrap cooled portions in foil and reheat over the campfire.

7)  When wrapping just a potato in foil rub it down with oil first.

8)  In most cases wrap meals so that there is some air space.

9)  Thinner cooks faster! Cut veggies thin.

10) Sugars burn so when using them keep them on the top of your meal.

11) Folding the tin foil: Get a tight seal. Fold the long sides together, crease them well and fold them over at least three times. Leave some room for expansion and steam. Fold in the corners of the remaining sides and then fold them over at least twice.

12) Tin foil meals meld flavors together so if you want separation of flavors wrap your meals accordingly, meat wrapped separately from carrots and so forth.

13) Seasonings, sauces, and soups can greatly enhance your tin foil meal so experiment and practice with what you like.

14) Mark the identity of each meal in some way. I put my meals in Ziploc bags and label each bag. Refrigerate or freeze before the outing.

15) A patrol should have tin foil in the grub box at camp. If you notice that a meal is open or torn you can repair before putting the meal in the coals.

Tin Foil Meal Recipes

Hawaiian Ham:
Ingredients:
Small water added smoked ham. Canned pineapple, rings, or chunks. Sweet potato or yam. Brown sugar.

Directions: Adjust ingredients to feed the number of scouts in your patrol. Per tin foil wrap add one slice of ham about one half inch thick. Put the ham on your tin foil. Now slice your yam into thin slices or small cubes, thin slices are less likely to puncture your tin foil. Place some of the yam onto the top of the ham. Drain off the juice from the pineapple and place some on top of the Yam now sprinkle with a little brown sugar. Wrap the tin foil leaving a little room for steam and place in the refrigerator. The steam will cook the yams in about 30 minutes. This meal can be cooked in the gray (cooler) camp fire coals or on the grate above a "cooking" fire.
