Scout Families,
Hope everyone has had a great Thanksgiving. I am trying to review paperwork for December campout at Camp Woodland, MOST overnight in January and for Scout Summer Camp next summer (which I hope all scouts will be able to attend). For those not attending Summer Camp, but attending MOST or Camp Woodland, I need to have you complete a Health and Medical Form, Parts A and B only for each scout and adult that are attending. If your scout is planning on attending summer camp, I also need to have Part C completed. This is a doctor's physical. If your scout will be attending Summer Camp in years to come, just make a practice to bring in Part C when he has his annual health physical, and have your doctor complete it. This will make it much easier over the years. My son's doctors have been very accommodating.
Here is the link to the form.
Please complete and give to me at the next meeting, so I can get them compiled. I need to have this before attending any overnights.
Thanks, Paul

Scout Families, We will have a den meeting on Tuesday at 7:00pm. To start the meeting, Troop 117 Scoutmaster Mat Rudd, along with his son, will come to introduce us to the Troop and to answer any questions the scouts may have, which will meet some Arrow of Light requirements. After that, we will head outside and will be learning how to change a tire on a car, as part of the Handyman Activity Badge. Jason Malcomb will be leading this event. It may be cold, so the scouts will learn that the fact of the matter is they can't always choose the time and the weather when they might need to do this. Hat/Gloves are recommended.
Finally, and importantly, I will be taking two registrations starting on Tuesday.
1) Webelos overnight at the MOST, for January 17th into 18th. This has just opened up, and for Webelos I, this may be new to you. This is the one and only opportunity the scouts will have to earn the Scientist activity badge. The MOST does a great job with this. It is a lot of fun and very educational. See attached flyer for detailed information. The cost is $38 per scout, which can be paid out of Scout Account built up from popcorn sales. All registered adult leaders are encouraged to attend, and the pack picks up the tab for adults. I will take registration for two weeks on this, and then send it in, as space is limited, and it is first come basis.
2) Dec 17th campout in the Venturing Cabin at Camp Woodland, that I have emailed about previously, with as much detail as I have at this point. All parents are encouraged to attend. This is a key event for knocking off multiple Arrow of Light requirements. $20 per family. If you can only make if for the day on Saturday, $10. I will take registrations for this for probably three weeks. Again, scout account can be used.
Regards, Paul

Scout Families,
This is a reminder about the overnight at Camp Woodland December 12-13 (Friday into Saturday). I am hoping that every scout can make this. For now, just mark your calendars. More than just a winter campout, it is fulfilling the following Arrow of Light requirements: 1) With your Webelos den, visit one Boy Scout oriented outdoor activity 2) Participate in a Webelos overnight campout or day hike.
So, this is particularly important for the Webelos 2 scouts, as they will be moving into the Troop this year. The Webelos I scouts can also get these things done, and exposure with the Boy Scouts is a good thing.
We will be staying in a cabin with propane heat. I have don't a solid schedule yet, but here is what I envision. Scouts show up Friday after dinner - 6pm or whenever they can make it that evening. Friday night, get set up, then have Cracker Barrel, snack, etc. and play games - Charades, Apples to Apples, cards, or any other appropriate games they bring. Saturday morning, scouts cook breakfast and do clean up with adult supervision. During the day on Saturday, do an outdoor activity with Boy Scout Troop 117 who will be camping there at the same time. Again, scouts do lunch. Also, during the day on Saturday, play Frisbee golf and touch football to fulfill Sportsman Activity Badge requirements. Maybe go for a hike. Obviously, if snow is too deep, we won't. If there is snow, we'll go sledding. Sometime during the day on Saturday, clear out of bunks, as the Bears will be moving into the cabin to camp Saturday into Sunday. Space permitting, we can still use the cabin for food/drinks/warmth, etc. Saturday dinner I have to figure out. Getting the Webelos in with the Boy Scouts would be ideal, but I have not arranged this yet. Saturday evening the Webelos head home whenever families need to.
Also, if any Webelos 2's have anything left over to do for the required Outdoorsman Activity Badge, we'll knock these out.
Regards, Paul

Scout Families,
We will be having a den meeting this Tuesday at 7:00pm at the church. We will be working on Bobcat Badge requirements. I realize that we have not covered these much in den meetings to date, but if any scout who has not yet earned the Bobcat Badge can do them by Tuesday, I will get the Bobcat Badge for him for the 10/21 Pack meeting. One important change. Since as Webelos they are preparing to become Boy Scouts, I will be substituting the Scout Oath and the Scout Law for the Cub Scout Promise and the Law of the Pack. Similarly for the Scout sign and Scout salute. These are in the Webelos book.
Following that, we will be discussing the First Class Scout Badge, which is a Webelos requirement, and then continuing with Readyman activity badge.
As we did last year, I will be asking the scouts to lead the flag ceremony each week. Since I have not yet prepared this with anyone, I will have my son Jacob lead it this week.
Last week, I found some dues money ($2) as I was cleaning up. Thanks to robust popcorn sales and other fundraisers, there will be no dues this year. Den incidentals will be paid for by the Pack. If the person who left the dues lets me know, I will return it. Otherwise, I will put it toward den activities. (To that person, thank you for your diligence.)
Regards, Paul

The Webelos will be doing an overnight at Camp Woodland December 12-13. We will be in a heated cabin, and this will be a joint event with Troop 117, who will be in a separate cabin. We will do at least one, or maybe several activities together, and then activities on our own. This fulfills requirements for the Arrow of Light, which makes it a very important event. The cost will be $20 per scout, including parent, if attending. More details as the time gets closer, but I wanted to hopefully get this on everybody's calendar, in order to maintain scout's progress toward the Arrow of Light.
The Bears will be coming in to stay Saturday into Sunday, so we will have to make accommodations for them to occupy the cabin that night.
More details later.
Regards, Paul

Scout families,
Last
night, the Troop stopped in and notified me of an opportunity for the
Webelos to participate in an overnight at Herkimer Diamond Mines October
24-26. The cost is $15 per person, but a parent is required, so it's
basically $30 per family. I have never, been, but I understand this is a
great place. I believe all attending scouts would earn the Geologist
Activity Pin.
Let me know if you are interested, and register with me at next week's den meeting.
Regarding the website that Chris mas mentioned,
http://pack117cicero.scoutlander.com
there
is a page for Webelos I and a page for Webelos II. Since all Webelos
meet together and do exactly the same activities, I am only going to
maintain the Webelos II page to keep it simple. All Webelos I and
Webelos II should refer to the Webelos II page for information.
Regards,
Paul

For this Tuesday's den meeting, we will be attending the Emergency Preparedness course that I have communicated before. Everyone should meet at this location at 6:30 pm There is no cost.
Tuesday, September 30, 2014 06:30 PM East Syracuse Minoa Central High School Auditorium 6400 Fremont Road East Syracuse, NY 13057.Some of you received a confirmation email, the text of which I have included in full, below. Scouts should come in uniform if they have it.
As I was registering all of you, I was notified that the class had reached its capacity. I emailed the folks and pled my case, and was able to get everybody registered. I registered one parent per scout, in most cases making my best guess as to which parent would attend, which is the one that typically brings them to meetings. If parents don't attend, no problem at all. If there are space limitations, I did make the offer since they were so kind to get us in, I would see if some parents could forgo to allow the scouts to get in. I don't think this will be the case, but if it is, I am asking some parents to show flexibility so the scouts can get in. So you may want to bring something to do, or errands to run, etc. - but again, I don't anticipate this will be the case.
We will be doing the Readyman Activity Badge this year, which is basic first aid, so this should be a nice fit.
If there are any questions, feel free to ask.
Paul
